The Tricks To Transition

Loading Likes...

Winter’s arrival doesn’t mean parting ways with our favourite spring and summer pieces. As boss ladies, we enjoy having access to all our pieces year round. The key to looking season appropriate is layering. It’s a well known fashion concept, and this week’s post dives into the considerations you need to make when it comes to layering under dresses.

COLOUR COMBINATIONS:

Getting your colour combination right is a tiered approach. The first tier is your dress colour. Is it bold, or is it subtle? Bolder coloured dresses are best paired with basic tops. Neutral toned dresses have more flexibility. Gain an understanding of the colours that work well with your dress colour. Referring to guides like this will help clear any confusions you may have.

DRESS NECKLINE:

The best dresses to layer under are dresses with a high (turtleneck or mockneck) or plunge neckline. Under a high neckline, any layering piece will go, as only the layering piece’s arms will be on display. Under a plunge neckline, layering pieces with a tight fit look the most appropriate. A personal favourite is layering a tight mockneck under a dress featuring a v neck plunge.

Two other types of dresses to consider are overall dresses and slip dresses. These dresses allow for more experimentation because of their cut and fit.

A final consideration to note:

Whilst material and detailing is a personal choice, remember to strike balance with the pieces you’re layering. Bold, brightly embellished layering pieces are fine so long as the dress is simple.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION:

This Zara dress is a summer staple. It is a multi-faceted dress, appropriate for both corporate and cocktail. The dress’ plunge neckline is shown off by layering a cashmere turtleneck in black, for cohesion. To highlight the gromit detailing on the dress, the accessories and boots are simple, classic and understated. A well tailored charcoal grey coat with strong button detailing is the final layering element to pull the look together.

There’s one colour that never fails to make you look expensive.

Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t black and it’s ability to add allure and slim you down; or red, which adds classic appeal.

WhoWhatWear reports that camel is one colour that looks good on every skin tone, and adds true luxe to any look. But let’s break down exactly how YOU should wear camel this season:

SKIN TONE

Camel items generally come in three tones: pink, brown and yellow. Choosing the right tone for your skin has a huge impact on your overall complexion. To enhance your natural highlight, warmer skinned individuals should choose camel garments with a yellow tone, whilst cooler toned women should choose a camel garment or accessory with a pink or quartz tone.

STYLING CAMEL

Styling camel is easy. almost any garment and accessory features camel. This week’s post heroes camel in three different looks – corporate, cocktail and casual (but by now, you should know that our casual looks still pack a huge punch! )

A VINTAGE VETERAN: VELVET

Materials.

They are the underrated gems that play such an important role on our runways. This season, velvet has made a huge comeback. But given its past dalliances in the 70s and 80s, society has rendered the material unwearable.

So how can a boss lady make such a luxe fabric work for her?

Here’s how:

ACCESSORIES:

boots.png

SHOELLAB

Shoes are the easiest way to incorporate velvet, because the material gets hidden. It’s like having your own little secret in our ensemble. Floral boots are huge right now, especially in a velvet finish. Pair your boots with cropped jeans and a tailored blazer; or let the boots do the talking by wearing a simple monochromatic dress.

necklace.png

ASOS

Elevate your looks with velvet necklaces in colours like Burgundy or navy blue. And to wear velvet for a more casual ensemble, choose necklaces with metals or beading entwined with velvet. Such necklaces compliment Sabrina, off-shoulder or boat necklines!

NAMJOSH

Try something new to enhance your casual links and give an ensemble personality with a velvet turban.

COUNTRY ROAD

Velvet scarves add texture and shine, perfect for a corporate outfit when paired with a trench coat and pencil dress. For a casual outing, a scarf will always compliment a fail proof jeans, boots and sweater combination.

bag.jpg

SOLE SOCIETY

Bags make a statement on their own. For a corporate setting, finish off your power suit with a structured velvet bag. For the evening, deeper toned velvet evening bags in Burgundy, crimson or purple will add a chic and unique vibe to your look.

CLOTHING:

TOPSHOP                                                                    H&M

Velvet is a soft, cozy yet luxe material flaunting elegance and fluidity. Straighter figures should opt for tops that are flown and smooth over the waist. Curvier figures should select a more fitted top but ensure the top is not too tight and always make sure to tuck it in! Looser velvet tops can be belted to flaunt your curves.

pants.jpg

OLD NAVY

On the bottom, cropped trousers are the most flattering silhouette, especially to take your look from day to night. Pair your trousers with a smart shirt and some pumps, for the perfect corporate look. To take this look to your evening events, simply change up your makeup and swap out your work tote for a detailed clutch.

As for the curvier ladies, while velvet wide leg trousers may be taboo, velvet is a forgiving material and looks fabulous in a slim cut. Choose a length that passes slightly over your ankle to elongate your legs. Tuck in your top and tie your look together with a belt.

skirts.png

ASOS

As for skirts, velvet is a great transitional material, both seasonally and for occasions. Pair a midi velvet skirt with a ruffled top and classic pumps for a daytime corporate look, and simply add a bold lip and lazy curls for the evening. Velvet’s smoothing texture makes it the perfect fabric for curvier women, especially in midi, pencil or A-Line silhouettes. Women flaunting thinner legs can opt for mini skirts or tighter midi skirts. But remember, the elegance of the material should reflect in the cut of the piece as well!

dress.png

BARDOT

Velvet dresses are uncommon, so they’re best to be showcased at events where the dress can do all the talking. All you need with a gorgeous velvet dress are simple accessories in matching metallic tones and a fierce attitude!

H&M

Velvet jackets and blazers are funky and feminine. They can be paired with a classic corporate skirt and skirt combination, or a tailored jumpsuit for the evening. Structured velvet jackets with tailoring at the waist flatter curvier women best. As for straighter figured women, opting for a masculine silhouette with an oversized blazer hitting the tops of your thighs will accentuate your high points.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

This week’s ensemble lets a velvet bag do ALL the talking! this look can be taken from day to night easily. The trends featured are navy on black, blazer dresses and sock boots.

PEACOCKS PRANCING

In Australia, November marks one major occasion on all our social calendars – the races. Think high fashion, endless bottles of champagne and ornate viewing parties. It’s one of the most exciting styling moments in a boss lady’s year. Today’s post pays homage to my style holy grails: originality, class and femininity. The look is inspired for the 2017 races, but can be worn for any formal Spring or Summer occasion.

The details:

styled by Salonee Goyal, curated by Simran Goyal

When styling an event where you have to look flawless from start to finish, choosing a material that you’re comfortable in is key. I chose to style one of the most loved dresses in my collection. I embodied the  wise words of Miranda Priestly, “Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking”. While florals are a beautiful addition to any wardrobe, why not use race season as an excuse to show off more unique designs?

I have styled a peacock printed silk dress. This dress flatters any body shape depending on how it is worn, and can be taken from day to night with a simple change of accessories. There are three elements that show why this dress is a favourite. The first is the silk material. Silk is a breathable material to wear on warm Spring days. The beauty of silk is that it drapes over your body instead of hugging it. This keeps the dress looking flawless and creaseless throughout the event, while allowing maximum comfort.

The second element is the tie feature on the neckline. This feature is what differentiates the dress from other pieces. There is no need to accessorise with necklaces as the ascot style jazzes the dress up and provides an exciting dimension to a classic silhouette. The third element is the printed belt. For curvier women like me, an adjustable belt is essential for drawing attention to the upper half of the body. Because the dress does not feature sewn on belt loops, women with a more athletic or straight build can wear this dress sans belt. The versatility of this dress highlights just how accommodating and flattering fashion can be.

The most striking aspect of this dress is the print. Royal peacock blues flow from the neckline and amalgamate with pearly white through the dress’ pleats, and finish with a soft ruffled hem. There are a few ways to accessorise this dress. For a more casual day time look, choose a pair of white, open toe sandals.

For a bit sparkle, why not select a pair of glittered, black pointed toe pumps.

IMG_0230

To complement the blue and black colour palette, I selected a pair of ornate, blue drop earrings, and a silver dress watch. A “no makeup” look is key for this outfit. Think glowy skin, rosy highlights on your cheeks and lips, and a soft blue and silver eye makeup look.

The bag I have chosen is a simple, quilted white clutch to match the white pleats in the dress. An understated bag that serves its stylistic and functional purpose ensures all attention remains on the dress.

A statement bun would take this look to the next level – the more braids, the merrier. I decided to create a rope-braided updo using second-day curls. Who says accessories are only meant for the body? While classic race fashion is to wear elaborate fascinators and head pieces, let your dress do the talking. Instead, adorn your hair with silver, pearl hair pins. Weaving a royal blue ribbon into the bun would also look incredible.

NIGHT LIGHTS

Today’s post is a celebration of the glitz and glamour. But not in the traditional way. I want to show you how to combine asymmetry with delicacy, for the perfect night out look. This look is versatile, chic and doesn’t compromise either style or comfort. In my mind, those are the key elements to ensuring you have a fabulous night out.

So let’s get started:

The details:

styled by Salonee Goyal, curated by Simran Goyal

IMG_0220.jpg

This ensemble celebrates a statement top. My ideal night out involves a lot of dancing, and I never want to compromise my comfort whilst I’m breaking out a killer dance sequence with my ladies. There are three key elements to this top that make it such a great piece in your wardrobe. The first is the asymmetrical hemline, providing a sassy and edgy cut to an otherwise feminine silhouette. The second element is the diamond neckline and complementing spaghetti straps. The combination of neckline style and strap width reveal just the right amount of skin whilst remaining classy. The final element is the shiny beading on the embroidered flowers, adding a touch of pizazz.

To accentuate the asymmetry, I’ve matched the top’s black underlay and beading, with a pair of black high waisted skinny jeans. My jeans are a denim blend, making them more stretchy, and more comfortable to dance the night away.

I couldn’t resist breaking out one of the most glamourous shoes in my collection. The muted silver sequins draw attention to the grey tones in the top, and further enhance the impact of the beading, especially from an onlooker’s perspective.

To create balance, my accessories are subtle. I chose a simple pair of black pearl studs with a silver embellishment, and a bright, silver bracelet with deep purple stones. This accessory combination gives the outfit a small pop of colour without stealing the attention from the top and shoes.

While I haven’t shown you a picture of me wearing the ensemble, I would frame this look with loose, messy waves to exude the excitement of a great night out. And while we’re at it, why not also play with bold makeup colours? I would go for a vampy lip and full lashes, or even a silver toned smokey eye. A pop of deep purple would be the perfect addition to this look.

If heels aren’t your shoe of choice, don’t sweat it. A sparkly pair of sandals would also work perfectly with this look. These are some of my top picks:
