WORKING YOUR WINTER WARDROBE

Loading Likes...

Looking chic in winter is tricky. How can we stay warm whilst juggling multiple layers of clothing, the rain and the temptation of just staying at home?

This week’s post is a handy little guide to keep in your arsenal, for when the winter blues hit, and your wardrobe needs a pick-me-up!

TIP ONE: THE BOYS

Menswear is not only on trend right now, but is the perfect inspiration guide for those chilly days. A tailored pant suit with smaller elements such as a necklace under the collars or sleek stiletto boots will keep you warm and stylish from nine to five. Your partner or brother’s wardrobe has never been of more use!

our tip: play around with combination suits this winter, and play on shades of grey or navy when creating a pant suit look. Also, don’t be afraid to foray into your partner’s cufflink collection. Cufflinks are an excellent way to accessorise any shirt and pant combination!

TIP TWO: RARING RUFFLE

Winter might make us feel as if we need to hide inside and sacrifice style to the elements. But why should we? Swap out a simple white shirt or black pencil skirt, for one with additional detailing to add fun and flirty elements to your ensemble. After all, inside an office building, the layers come off, so use the boardroom as your catwalk to showcase a feminine yet edgy look!

 MORGAN                                                                       Y.A.S

our tip: tailoring is key. Even the simplest white shirt can be elevated by adding ruffles, buttons or hardware. Seek out accessories that are office appropriate for your corporate code, and let your ensembles speak for themselves!

TIP THREE: FLIRTING WITH FLORAL

Whilst floral may be a typically spring fling, taking floral prints in moody Burgundy or purple tones can help add colour to a dreary winters day. Play around with the length of floral dresses or skirts, and have fun mixing up floral prints with other textures such as satin or velvet – especially if your dress code is casual business.

PORTMANS                                                            PORTMANS

our tip: florals in winter are always about balance. darker tones will add depth to any look, even if the floral is understated or subtle.

TIP FOUR: BOXED BLOUSES

As the wind chill picks up, swap out crepe or silk blouses for cashmere knits flaunting a mock or turtle neck as a fun addition underneath a blazer. A striking maroon turtleneck under a simple yet well tailored pant suit might make all the difference to your look and feel for the day.

our tip: whilst you don’t need to spend exorbitant amounts of money on knitwear, ensure you invest in pieces that do not reveal threads or catch pills easily. Maintaining a crisp appearance by being well groomed is equally about your hair and makeup, as it is about the state of your clothing.

TIP FIVE: ACCENT WITH ACCESSORIES

Scarves and big, bold bags are the way to go in winter. A chic scarf adds warmth to any look and is a great way to add colour and other textures to otherwise simpler ensembles. Also carrying a more structured tote that fits a lot more will add an air of no-nonsense boss lady as you confidently strut to your building, even in the coldest of temperatures.

our tip: as with clothing, spend time and invest carefully in accessories such as bags and scarves. These items should carry you throughout multiple seasons.

$HOW ME THE MONEY!

There’s one colour that never fails to make you look expensive.

Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t black and it’s ability to add allure and slim you down; or red, which adds classic appeal.

WhoWhatWear reports that camel is one colour that looks good on every skin tone, and adds true luxe to any look. But let’s break down exactly how YOU should wear camel this season:

SKIN TONE

Camel items generally come in three tones: pink, brown and yellow. Choosing the right tone for your skin has a huge impact on your overall complexion. To enhance your natural highlight, warmer skinned individuals should choose camel garments with a yellow tone, whilst cooler toned women should choose a camel garment or accessory with a pink or quartz tone.

STYLING CAMEL

Styling camel is easy. almost any garment and accessory features camel. This week’s post heroes camel in three different looks – corporate, cocktail and casual (but by now, you should know that our casual looks still pack a huge punch! )

A VINTAGE VETERAN: VELVET

Materials.

They are the underrated gems that play such an important role on our runways. This season, velvet has made a huge comeback. But given its past dalliances in the 70s and 80s, society has rendered the material unwearable.

So how can a boss lady make such a luxe fabric work for her?

Here’s how:

ACCESSORIES:

boots.png

SHOELLAB

Shoes are the easiest way to incorporate velvet, because the material gets hidden. It’s like having your own little secret in our ensemble. Floral boots are huge right now, especially in a velvet finish. Pair your boots with cropped jeans and a tailored blazer; or let the boots do the talking by wearing a simple monochromatic dress.

necklace.png

ASOS

Elevate your looks with velvet necklaces in colours like Burgundy or navy blue. And to wear velvet for a more casual ensemble, choose necklaces with metals or beading entwined with velvet. Such necklaces compliment Sabrina, off-shoulder or boat necklines!

turban.jpg

NAMJOSH

Try something new to enhance your casual links and give an ensemble personality with a velvet turban.

66852_328024_185677.jpg

COUNTRY ROAD

Velvet scarves add texture and shine, perfect for a corporate outfit when paired with a trench coat and pencil dress. For a casual outing, a scarf will always compliment a fail proof jeans, boots and sweater combination.

bag.jpg

SOLE SOCIETY

Bags make a statement on their own. For a corporate setting, finish off your power suit with a structured velvet bag. For the evening, deeper toned velvet evening bags in Burgundy, crimson or purple will add a chic and unique vibe to your look.

CLOTHING:

TOPSHOP                                                                    H&M

Velvet is a soft, cozy yet luxe material flaunting elegance and fluidity. Straighter figures should opt for tops that are flown and smooth over the waist. Curvier figures should select a more fitted top but ensure the top is not too tight and always make sure to tuck it in! Looser velvet tops can be belted to flaunt your curves.

pants.jpg

OLD NAVY

On the bottom, cropped trousers are the most flattering silhouette, especially to take your look from day to night. Pair your trousers with a smart shirt and some pumps, for the perfect corporate look. To take this look to your evening events, simply change up your makeup and swap out your work tote for a detailed clutch.

As for the curvier ladies, while velvet wide leg trousers may be taboo, velvet is a forgiving material and looks fabulous in a slim cut. Choose a length that passes slightly over your ankle to elongate your legs. Tuck in your top and tie your look together with a belt.

skirts.png

ASOS

As for skirts, velvet is a great transitional material, both seasonally and for occasions. Pair a midi velvet skirt with a ruffled top and classic pumps for a daytime corporate look, and simply add a bold lip and lazy curls for the evening. Velvet’s smoothing texture makes it the perfect fabric for curvier women, especially in midi, pencil or A-Line silhouettes. Women flaunting thinner legs can opt for mini skirts or tighter midi skirts. But remember, the elegance of the material should reflect in the cut of the piece as well!

dress.png

BARDOT

Velvet dresses are uncommon, so they’re best to be showcased at events where the dress can do all the talking. All you need with a gorgeous velvet dress are simple accessories in matching metallic tones and a fierce attitude!

hmprod.jpeg

H&M

Velvet jackets and blazers are funky and feminine. They can be paired with a classic corporate skirt and skirt combination, or a tailored jumpsuit for the evening. Structured velvet jackets with tailoring at the waist flatter curvier women best. As for straighter figured women, opting for a masculine silhouette with an oversized blazer hitting the tops of your thighs will accentuate your high points.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

This week’s ensemble lets a velvet bag do ALL the talking! this look can be taken from day to night easily. The trends featured are navy on black, blazer dresses and sock boots.

SPEECHLESS FOR THE SLEEVELESS

Loading Likes...

Raise your hand if you own a sleeveless jacket, maybe in shearling, maybe with a faux fur detail. That’s right. Every woman has owned a sleeveless jacket at some stage. These jackets are the quintessential autumn layering piece. They are versatile, perfect as a cool statement, and make for great overthrows for when it really cools down.

Today’s post is going to show how to take one sleeveless jacket (below) and style it for work, casual outings and formal occasions. This versatile piece is structured and classy. It features a faux fur collar with leather detailing at the shoulders and a leather belt at the waist.

THE DETAILS

jacket: Seed Heritage

CORPORATE

Faux fur is a glamorous, but a more casual addition to an outfit ensemble. It is not generally associated with an office environment. However, investing in a sleeveless jacket with a detachable fur feature is a bonus. A stricter work dress code is easily adhered to by removing the fur lining and dressing your jacket with a cashmere scarf instead.

And when you leave work for team drinks, simply swap the scarf and fur detail and you’re ready to go!

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

The sleeveless jacket has been styled to accentuate the clean, military feel of the garment – there is no doubt everybody will know the boss lady has arrived!

Ladies, you can never go wrong when pairing a sleeveless jacket with some tailored pants, a snug sweater or boots. It is the ultimate partner for achieving comfort chic style, whether it be with or without the fur. Play around with how you zip up the jacket and accessorise. If fur isn’t your taste, there’s always an alternate option.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION:

Autumn is a season of transition. It is all about layering so bring out those summer pieces and be creative with your looks. When Learing a sleeveless jacket, it’s not only about the colours that I combined. Play around with textures as well, such as, knits, cashmere, fur and microsuede.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

Why not play on the faux feature of the jacket by introducing a faux leather pant as well? Use elements of your jacket in new ways. A waist belt is not restricted to the jacket, but can be included as an embellishment on the pants instead.

PAIRING PLAID PART TWO

Loading Likes...

Now that we’ve established introducing a trend like plaid into our wardrobe, let’s talk about wearing plaid in larger doses – tops, pants, skirts and dresses.

UP TOP:

VERO MODA                                   SHEIN                                              ASOS

In tops, there are three things to consider: print size, top length, and fitting.

PRINT SIZE:

For women with straighter figures (rectangular, apple and inverted triangle), select looser fitting tops that feature a less intricate print. Big checks or wider plaid patterns are much more flattering for these silhouettes. On the other hand, curvier women (pear, hourglass) should choose more intricate and exciting designs to ensure the attention remains on the top half of the body.

TOP LENGTH AND FITTING:

Since plaid is such a striking pattern, ensure that the top length is longer for women with straighter figures. The top must support a looser fitting. For curvier women, the top length should be shorter or neatly tucked into the bottom garment with a tight fitting so that every gorgeous curve is on full display.

MATCHING TOP TO BOTTOM:

Because plaid as a print speaks for itself, pair your tops with simple bottoms, such as, well fitted jeans, tailored shorts and skirts.

Colour is very important when pairing plaid. For apple/rectangular/inverted triangle body shapes, the colour of the bottom garment you choose should not be dull, for example, if your top features red, black and white, go for a pair of medium-wash denim shorts. Your long legs are an asset that should not be shadowed.

For the ladies with curves, Stick to darker, solid colours for a more slimming effect.

DOWN BELOW:

TBDRESS                                                                       TBDRESS

For pants, we must consider leg shape and plaid pattern.

PLAID PRINT:

Women with an apple, rectangular or inverted triangle silhouette, in most cases, feature thinner legs. plaid pants are perfect in any hue or pattern. Pear and hourglass shaped figures should wear a more subtle plaid print, in darker hues. Wearing a dramatic plaid print are not as flattering on such figures as the attention is drawn away from your curvy waistline.

LEG SHAPE:

For women with straighter figures, you have the flexibility to play around with flared pants, keeping it classic in a slim cut, or even opting for a cropped-style trouser pant. However, for the curvy ladies, pants should have a straight leg fitting and skim over the hips and thighs. This is critical to balance out the heavier hips and thighs with the thinner lower half of the leg.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS:

FOREVER21                                                              DRESSLILY

Plaid dresses are fun, flirty and work for corporate or day-time events. Any print or colour can be worn. The consideration lies in dress style, body shape and the accessories chosen to complete the look. Plaid is such an outspoken print, so ensure that the accompanying accessories do not overwhelm an onlooker because there is too much drama.

Essentially, with plaid dresses, less is best. However, the most important criterion is body shape.

PEAR:

Ensure that the dress features a cinched waist or a belt. Pencil and A-line dresses are perfect.

HOURGLASS:

Ensure that the dress features a cinched waist or a belt. A pencil dress is your go-to this fall.

APPLE:

Select a dress that features a large waist belt and a flouncy, flirty skirt.

RECTANGULAR:

Body-con is your best choice to accentuate every curve.

INVERTED TRIANGLE:

A dress featuring an A-line frame would be perfect to balance the broadness of the shoulders.

SKIRT-ING AROUNG

     ZARA                                                  ZARA                            URBAN OUTFITTERS

Much like dresses, plaid skirts come in a variety of colours, prints and textures, and can be worn by women of all shapes. Keep in mind the event you’re dressing for when choosing a plaid skirt, as length and print are significant considerations.

IMG_0746.jpg

For this week’s look, I chose to style a fun, sleeveless plaid shirt. As a curvier women, I paired the skirt with a classic pair of dark wash denim. As a bonus, the dark wash denim ties well with the blue stripe in the plaid design. I finished the look with a pair of nude wedges.

To accompany the blue, I went with square, blue studs and a timeless IWC watch. To add a little more flair, I chose a structured, dark brown hat.

THE JUMPSUIT AGENDA

Loading Likes...

Jumpsuits are an item with a lot of stigma. There’s usually a big question associated with whether a girl has the body to pull it off.

My challenge for this week is show to you how to create a jumpsuit look with items that you have in your own wardrobes.

The key thing to remember is that there is a way to style them based on your body proportions – not everything can suit everyone. You need to figure out how to make a trend work on your figure.

After all, isn’t that what fashion is truly about – expressing your best self?

Another factor to consider is not overcomplicating the look. Since jumpsuits speak for themselves, complete the look with small touches.

Considering body proportions is exceptionally important to ensure that the jumpsuit is worn in the best way. For jumpsuits, the main elements are shoulder size, waist size and leg shape.

Looks are styled by Salonee Goyal, curated by Simran Goyal

INVERTED TRIANGLE | RECTANGLE

These three figures flaunt broader shoulders, straighter waists and thinner legs. A slim leg trouser is the best option, to maximize the impact of accentuating leg shape. The top you choose is important, as it creates the illusion of a combined silhouette. Any sleeveless top is perfect, but make sure the top is not tight. A tight top will draw away from the illusion of accentuated curves. Because a jumpsuit look is attempting to be created from separates, the top must be tucked in.

IMG_6982.JPG

PEAR | HOURGLASS

Women with these figures flaunt narrow waists and bigger hips. To compliment these two elements, a wide leg pant is essential. This creates the illusion of longer legs, and balances the attention drawn to the bottom half. Any top can be worn, but make sure the top is figure hugging. Wearing a looser top will hide your beautiful curves. Always wear a belt or waist accessory to draw the attention up.

IMG_0463

IMG_0470

ACCESSORIES

Jumpsuits are versatile. Your accessories will depend on the occasion you’re attending, and the colour of your jumpsuit. If you’re styling separates as a jumpsuit for a corporate look, a sleek wrist watch and studded earrings would be perfect. In a formal event setting, a pop of lipstick and edgy jewellery paired with a statement clutch will elevate your look.

IMG_0480

To take your look from the boardroom to the brunch table, or even the races, consider also adding a structured, brim hat. Maybe embellish the hat with a patterned or floral ribbon.

Pointed toe pumps, wedges; or sandals with a single band across the toe are the most ideal options in the shoe department, so that attention from the jumpsuit is not drawn away. If your jumpsuit creation has patterns or print, avoid wearing a textured shoe.

As for hair, if your jumpsuit features more skin up top, loose waves would be the most appropriate. However, ensure your hair is behind your shoulders. For a corporate look, a sleek bun will keep the look professional and chic.

THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

“A festive dress-up is the nicest kind: indulgent and cosy, rather than exposed or difficult or provocative”

Jess Cartner-Morley, the Guardian Australia

In my morning perusal of the news, I stumbled across an article in the Guardian Australia, about Christmas dressing and its do’s and don’ts. What’s inspired my post today is a summer twist to Christmas dressing for everyone in the southern hemisphere, who still want to look chic and put together, despite the warmer temperatures.

Office Christmas parties can be difficult to style, because it’s about striking a balance between maintaining your corporate dress code, whilst still getting into the holiday spirit. Choose demure cuts with simpler prints and colour schemes. The last thing you want to do is mix Christmas with Halloween. Don’t hesitate to wear a pair of statement heels or earrings, but make sure your outfit is overall sober. A fun way to accessorise is with a Christmas themed manicure. Keep your hair and makeup sleek.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS LUNCH

Family Christmas lunches are a time to reconnect with your loved ones. Wear bright colours and exciting prints to match the holiday vibe. Don’t hesitate to steer away from traditional Christmas colours. Wear an ensemble that will make you feel chic, comfortable and support your inevitable food baby. Keep your hair and makeup simple and natural. A voluminous braid or loose waves will emulate the comfort and casual atmosphere.

A Christmas dinner is all about the classic cuts and Christmas colours, regardless of the temperature outside. You can still wear navy, crimson and fig in summer. It’s about choosing the right cut and neckline to accentuate your best features. Adding a little flair through statement jewellery and festive makeup will complement the beautiful atmosphere and feast. Family occasions are also the perfect moment to treat yourself and get your hair and nails done. A gorgeous braided bun or effortless curls are the perfect addition to your look.

Styling an event with friends all depends on the time of day. True to Aussie spirit, wear flirty cuts and light fabrics perfect to enjoy with chilled beers and a barbecue, or a breezy and boozy party on the beach. Let your hair, makeup and accessories emulate the relaxed vibe by opting for beachy waves, a messy updo and sunkissed makeup.

I hope these tips and tricks keep you ladies looking flawless this party season.
