WORKING YOUR WINTER WARDROBE

Loading Likes...

Looking chic in winter is tricky. How can we stay warm whilst juggling multiple layers of clothing, the rain and the temptation of just staying at home?

This week’s post is a handy little guide to keep in your arsenal, for when the winter blues hit, and your wardrobe needs a pick-me-up!

TIP ONE: THE BOYS

Menswear is not only on trend right now, but is the perfect inspiration guide for those chilly days. A tailored pant suit with smaller elements such as a necklace under the collars or sleek stiletto boots will keep you warm and stylish from nine to five. Your partner or brother’s wardrobe has never been of more use!

our tip: play around with combination suits this winter, and play on shades of grey or navy when creating a pant suit look. Also, don’t be afraid to foray into your partner’s cufflink collection. Cufflinks are an excellent way to accessorise any shirt and pant combination!

TIP TWO: RARING RUFFLE

Winter might make us feel as if we need to hide inside and sacrifice style to the elements. But why should we? Swap out a simple white shirt or black pencil skirt, for one with additional detailing to add fun and flirty elements to your ensemble. After all, inside an office building, the layers come off, so use the boardroom as your catwalk to showcase a feminine yet edgy look!

 MORGAN                                                                       Y.A.S

our tip: tailoring is key. Even the simplest white shirt can be elevated by adding ruffles, buttons or hardware. Seek out accessories that are office appropriate for your corporate code, and let your ensembles speak for themselves!

TIP THREE: FLIRTING WITH FLORAL

Whilst floral may be a typically spring fling, taking floral prints in moody Burgundy or purple tones can help add colour to a dreary winters day. Play around with the length of floral dresses or skirts, and have fun mixing up floral prints with other textures such as satin or velvet – especially if your dress code is casual business.

PORTMANS                                                            PORTMANS

our tip: florals in winter are always about balance. darker tones will add depth to any look, even if the floral is understated or subtle.

TIP FOUR: BOXED BLOUSES

As the wind chill picks up, swap out crepe or silk blouses for cashmere knits flaunting a mock or turtle neck as a fun addition underneath a blazer. A striking maroon turtleneck under a simple yet well tailored pant suit might make all the difference to your look and feel for the day.

our tip: whilst you don’t need to spend exorbitant amounts of money on knitwear, ensure you invest in pieces that do not reveal threads or catch pills easily. Maintaining a crisp appearance by being well groomed is equally about your hair and makeup, as it is about the state of your clothing.

TIP FIVE: ACCENT WITH ACCESSORIES

Scarves and big, bold bags are the way to go in winter. A chic scarf adds warmth to any look and is a great way to add colour and other textures to otherwise simpler ensembles. Also carrying a more structured tote that fits a lot more will add an air of no-nonsense boss lady as you confidently strut to your building, even in the coldest of temperatures.

our tip: as with clothing, spend time and invest carefully in accessories such as bags and scarves. These items should carry you throughout multiple seasons.

STREET APPEAL

Loading Likes...

With Fashion Week done and dusted for another season, it’s time to talk what’s new, exciting and on trend. Namely, we wanted to focus on the plethora of street style inspirations our instagram was flooded with.

Street style is everywhere. It’s cool, relaxed and a true celebration of tailoring, material and combination. Edge, unexpectedly high levels of sass and a sleek nonchalance are to be expected.

But what exactly is street style?

Street style, as the name suggests, has always been there. But it rose to prominence post World War II. An acceptance of different style and flaunting femininity or masculinity through androgynous tailoring is what we associate with street style. It’s a true celebration of quality materials and textures, and allows any style icon to be comfortable all day. Sneakers, asymmetry and unique tailored cuts are essential elements of street style.

So what went down at fashion week?

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was a true celebration of how Sydney, as a fashion conglomerate in its own right, displays street style reminiscent of what Sydney is – young, fresh and laidback. The vibe is moody, carefree and promotes true comfort whilst breaking fashion barriers. Wider framed aviator frames, the juxtaposition of leather and pale florals, bold and monotoned atheleisure and a celebration of tailoring that took frame and size to the limit were all on show this year:

This week’s outfit draws on our favourite aspects of street style – mixing textures and size. We stayed true to our femininity by flaunting the sharpest aspects of the body. The look is clean, sharp and excessively cool in that effortless way. We amalgamated power suiting and street style to create a mixed look with cuffed trousers, an oversized vintage velvet blazer (sans top of course) to take control of the top, and finished the look with a biting pair of slingbacks.

BREAK THROUGH YOUR INTERVIEW (PART ONE)

Loading Likes...

Your resumé and references are stellar. You know you’re a shoe-in for the new role. But what about your ensemble? Nailing an interview is about possessing true confidence, both inside and out. You want to stand out both on paper, and in person.

This week’s post is a guide to inspire how you can take your interview ensembles to the next level.

Showing personality in your clothing speaks volumes at a job interview. It is an excellent way to demonstrate your creativity, and single you out from the rest of the applicants. Having a different sense of style in the interview room or assessment centre is a great conversation starter, and will ensure you are remembered!

COLOUR:

Business Insider provides a detailed explanation of the characteristics of different colours and their impact on a colleague. For example, black conveys leadership, whilst blue creates a sense of calm or trust.

BLACK

Black screams power player. When wearing black, mix and match a black skirt, or black blazer with other colours. If you are wearing a black dress, wear one that features unique detailing at the neckline or flaunts a different hemline. Add some unique jewellery, a pop of colour or a contrasting bag to brighten your look. There’s no harm in owning a black power suit. Play it up with textures, tones and your blouse underneath to really make a statement!

BLUE

True to the hue, blue ignites trust and loyalty. Blue is one of the safest colours to wear to an interview. Navy blue is both classic and chic, and has been voted the preferred colour to impress at an interview. Navy blue works on any garment or accessory!

Grey denotes independence and control over logic and analytics. Pants and blazers in grey are perfect when paired with olive, teal or dark purple blouses. Our advice would be to go toward a steel or charcoal grey, to ensure your ensemble does not get washed out under fluorescent lighting.

WHITE

White indicates softness. It’s hard to truly radiate self confidence in a white ensemble, and you do not want to strike your future employers as someone who lacks creativity or passion. White detailing is acceptable, but try and steer away from the white shirt, black bottom combination.

BROWN

Brown is an interesting corporate colour. Brown invokes dependability in the eyes of an onlooker. The most flattering way to feature brown is through accessories like shoes, bags or your watch strap. A darker brown, in a more patent finish definitely screams classy.

RED

Red makes all the stops. It’s hard not to feel sexy, powerful and unstoppable in red. For interviews however, maybe steer clear of the Hilary Clinton-esque show stopper and save that ensemble for when you truly own the boardroom. Crimson and maroon blouses are great additions to a pant suit, to add femininity. Wearing red in accessories such as a thin belt to compliment a black dress, or your earrings are a great way to feature the colour as well.

REST OF THE RAINBOW

COLours like orange, yellow, purple and green convey creativity and vivacity. These colours have a bad rap, with most women arguing they should only be worn to interviews in creative fields such as media. However, as firm believers of styling correctly, the first thing to consider is where you are interviewing, and who you will be speaking with. Read up on the company’s dress code. If formal business attire is the way to go, maybe save the yellow dress and instead, flaunt gold in artfully dainty jewellery, or on your bag’s hardware.

Whilst orange on black is very on trend for autumn/winter 2018, the contrast is too stark. Giving your interviewers a shock may not be the best way to go. Avoid neon and exceptionally bright colours, and opt for deeper, more sober tones of colours such as burnt ombre instead of orange, violet instead of lavender or forest green instead of turquoise.

BALANCING COLOUR:

tip one: swap your white blouse for another colour.

tip two: ensure your bag is both functional and aesthetic. A contrast bag will brighten any ensemble (but ensure the colour choice is still appropriate for the workplace. A neon yellow bag won’t do so well at a professional services firm, no matter how charming you are).

tip three: belts don’t just have to be for ensuring your pants stay up. Belts are great finishing elements to any look.

tip four: Black leather pumps are a safe bet for an interview. If you can, try find a variation on the black stiletto pump. Having a small detail on your shoe adds some excitement, whilst still keeping your look modest and professional.

tip five: depending on the company, wearing a lip colour will add glow to your face. If in doubt though, a dark nude that works to your skin tone is fool proof.

A VINTAGE VETERAN: VELVET

Loading Likes...

Materials.

They are the underrated gems that play such an important role on our runways. This season, velvet has made a huge comeback. But given its past dalliances in the 70s and 80s, society has rendered the material unwearable.

So how can a boss lady make such a luxe fabric work for her?

Here’s how:

ACCESSORIES:

boots.png

SHOELLAB

Shoes are the easiest way to incorporate velvet, because the material gets hidden. It’s like having your own little secret in our ensemble. Floral boots are huge right now, especially in a velvet finish. Pair your boots with cropped jeans and a tailored blazer; or let the boots do the talking by wearing a simple monochromatic dress.

necklace.png

ASOS

Elevate your looks with velvet necklaces in colours like Burgundy or navy blue. And to wear velvet for a more casual ensemble, choose necklaces with metals or beading entwined with velvet. Such necklaces compliment Sabrina, off-shoulder or boat necklines!

turban.jpg

NAMJOSH

Try something new to enhance your casual links and give an ensemble personality with a velvet turban.

66852_328024_185677.jpg

COUNTRY ROAD

Velvet scarves add texture and shine, perfect for a corporate outfit when paired with a trench coat and pencil dress. For a casual outing, a scarf will always compliment a fail proof jeans, boots and sweater combination.

bag.jpg

SOLE SOCIETY

Bags make a statement on their own. For a corporate setting, finish off your power suit with a structured velvet bag. For the evening, deeper toned velvet evening bags in Burgundy, crimson or purple will add a chic and unique vibe to your look.

CLOTHING:

TOPSHOP                                                                    H&M

Velvet is a soft, cozy yet luxe material flaunting elegance and fluidity. Straighter figures should opt for tops that are flown and smooth over the waist. Curvier figures should select a more fitted top but ensure the top is not too tight and always make sure to tuck it in! Looser velvet tops can be belted to flaunt your curves.

pants.jpg

OLD NAVY

On the bottom, cropped trousers are the most flattering silhouette, especially to take your look from day to night. Pair your trousers with a smart shirt and some pumps, for the perfect corporate look. To take this look to your evening events, simply change up your makeup and swap out your work tote for a detailed clutch.

As for the curvier ladies, while velvet wide leg trousers may be taboo, velvet is a forgiving material and looks fabulous in a slim cut. Choose a length that passes slightly over your ankle to elongate your legs. Tuck in your top and tie your look together with a belt.

skirts.png

ASOS

As for skirts, velvet is a great transitional material, both seasonally and for occasions. Pair a midi velvet skirt with a ruffled top and classic pumps for a daytime corporate look, and simply add a bold lip and lazy curls for the evening. Velvet’s smoothing texture makes it the perfect fabric for curvier women, especially in midi, pencil or A-Line silhouettes. Women flaunting thinner legs can opt for mini skirts or tighter midi skirts. But remember, the elegance of the material should reflect in the cut of the piece as well!

dress.png

BARDOT

Velvet dresses are uncommon, so they’re best to be showcased at events where the dress can do all the talking. All you need with a gorgeous velvet dress are simple accessories in matching metallic tones and a fierce attitude!

hmprod.jpeg

H&M

Velvet jackets and blazers are funky and feminine. They can be paired with a classic corporate skirt and skirt combination, or a tailored jumpsuit for the evening. Structured velvet jackets with tailoring at the waist flatter curvier women best. As for straighter figured women, opting for a masculine silhouette with an oversized blazer hitting the tops of your thighs will accentuate your high points.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

This week’s ensemble lets a velvet bag do ALL the talking! this look can be taken from day to night easily. The trends featured are navy on black, blazer dresses and sock boots.

CLASSIC COMFORT: THE CULOTTE

Loading Likes...

Let’s face it, culottes have been the colossal comeback fashion was waiting for. From colour to stripes, and even floral, brands have found countless ways to innovate with this versatile garment.

We all love culottes for their comfort. The best part is, that they can be worn in various ways to suit a plethora of occasions; just by changing your top, shoes or accessories.

This week, I have prepared three different looks that celebrate culottes – corporate, casual and cocktail.

styled by Salonee Goyal, curated by Simran Goyal

CORPORATE

Minimalist fashion is on trend this season, and what better way to incorporate two trends whilst still being work appropriate?

office.png

I paired my culottes with a white, scoop-neck t-shirt (tucked in tightly) and a cropped three-quarter sleeve, textured white blazer. To draw attention upward, I added a black, leather belt; and completed the look with a pair of black, leather, stiletto pumps.

For women with less curvier figures (rectangular, inverted triangle or apple), my advice is to forego the belt and tuck the t-shirt in a more relaxed manner, so that the crease sits neatly at the pant’s waist line. Alternatively, you could wear a white cropped t-shirt to achieve the same effect. Wearing a longer blazer will aid in drawing attention to your lower half.

I accessorised with a vintage Omega watch, dainty white and gold statement earrings; and a soft makeup look featuring a pink lip. You can never go wrong with a structured black bag to tie together a corporate ensemble.

CASUAL

This ensemble is chic and edgy – perfect for a day out with friends.

A black camisole with scalloped detailing on the bust has been neatly tucked into the camel culottes. Black heeled leather sock boots give this look drama, whist maintaining feminine flair. I have draped a leather jacket over the shoulders – the ultimate edge icon.

grungr 3

Laced up leather boots are another great shoe alternative, if that’s more your style.

gringe 2

A black crop top of similar style would also look exceptional with this outfit. But if this is not your style, and your body falls under the rectangular, apple or inverted triangle categories, then opt for a camisole that is loose and hangs neatly over the pant’s waist line.

I’ve added a link to a Wonder Woman inspired look created by Kayley Melissa, which I recreated to increase the look’s drama.

COCKTAIL

To take these culottes out for the night, I have selected a black top with a Sabrina neck-line that has been neatly tucked in. I chose to add a white marble texture as my third detail, and this features on my sandals, my earrings and my ring. My hair is lightly waved and pinned back into a half up-do.

evening

I’ve added another link to a hair tutorial by Missy Sue, which inspired my own up-do:

How to make snake print work for you.

Every girl has that one statement piece in their wardrobe that they adore, but never know what to pair it with. Are you currently  facing this dilemma?

My statement piece is a gorgeous pair of snake print pumps. And for three years, they have been sitting in my wardrobe, neatly packed away because I haven’t found a way to style it to my satisfaction.

Inspiration to style these statement pumps struck me while I was choosing outfits for the work week ahead. I set myself the challenge to make these gorgeous heels corporate appropriate.

styled by Salonee Goyal, curated by Simran Goyal

the details:

Fashion is all about balance. When you have a statement piece like a snake print shoe, it is important to ensure the remainder of the outfit doesn’t draw attention.

This is why I combined a crisp black blazer with black skinny work pants and a lace top. Androgynous style is not only on trend right now, but has inspired many of my power suit ensembles. On one hand, I have a feminine pair of shoes, so why not balance it out by venturing towards tailored business pieces?

6A70B64A-B7A7-4487-9313-96EF7A3D2E72

My favourite part about this look is the fact that I encompassed a crop top in it. Crop tops are taboo in corporate ensembles. My style tip to wear a crop top at work is to pair it with a high-waisted bottom, such as the skinny pants I’m wearing. A pencil skirt would also look exceptionally flattering. The key is to ensure your crop top is neatly tucked in.

hair:

To keep the look sleek and professional given how bold it is, I put my hair into a neat top-knot.

makeup:

Power suits possess a more masculine edge. This is why I decided to keep my makeup neutral. Neutral makeup is corporate appropriate and does not draw attention away from the delicacy of the lace, or the boldness of the snake print.

accessories:

It is essential to ensure your accessories compliment each other. I decided to choose natural materials and monochromatic colours to accentuate the snake print detail and the contrast of black lace on a green underlay in my crop top. For my bag, I went with a black, leather tote to make my power suit pop. I paired simple black studs with a silver detailing that matched that of the lace crop top. And to finish my look, I went with a vintage Omega watch, with a black leather strap.

IMG_0133

IMG_0135

As I’ve shown below, this ensemble can also be paired with a bold bag to give it a more dramatic edge. I used a green cross body bag, but removed shoulder strap to make the look more feminine.
