The Tricks To Transition

Loading Likes...

Winter’s arrival doesn’t mean parting ways with our favourite spring and summer pieces. As boss ladies, we enjoy having access to all our pieces year round. The key to looking season appropriate is layering. It’s a well known fashion concept, and this week’s post dives into the considerations you need to make when it comes to layering under dresses.

COLOUR COMBINATIONS:

Getting your colour combination right is a tiered approach. The first tier is your dress colour. Is it bold, or is it subtle? Bolder coloured dresses are best paired with basic tops. Neutral toned dresses have more flexibility. Gain an understanding of the colours that work well with your dress colour. Referring to guides like this will help clear any confusions you may have.

DRESS NECKLINE:

The best dresses to layer under are dresses with a high (turtleneck or mockneck) or plunge neckline. Under a high neckline, any layering piece will go, as only the layering piece’s arms will be on display. Under a plunge neckline, layering pieces with a tight fit look the most appropriate. A personal favourite is layering a tight mockneck under a dress featuring a v neck plunge.

Two other types of dresses to consider are overall dresses and slip dresses. These dresses allow for more experimentation because of their cut and fit.

A final consideration to note:

Whilst material and detailing is a personal choice, remember to strike balance with the pieces you’re layering. Bold, brightly embellished layering pieces are fine so long as the dress is simple.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION:

This Zara dress is a summer staple. It is a multi-faceted dress, appropriate for both corporate and cocktail. The dress’ plunge neckline is shown off by layering a cashmere turtleneck in black, for cohesion. To highlight the gromit detailing on the dress, the accessories and boots are simple, classic and understated. A well tailored charcoal grey coat with strong button detailing is the final layering element to pull the look together.

WORKING YOUR WINTER WARDROBE

Loading Likes...

Looking chic in winter is tricky. How can we stay warm whilst juggling multiple layers of clothing, the rain and the temptation of just staying at home?

This week’s post is a handy little guide to keep in your arsenal, for when the winter blues hit, and your wardrobe needs a pick-me-up!

TIP ONE: THE BOYS

Menswear is not only on trend right now, but is the perfect inspiration guide for those chilly days. A tailored pant suit with smaller elements such as a necklace under the collars or sleek stiletto boots will keep you warm and stylish from nine to five. Your partner or brother’s wardrobe has never been of more use!

our tip: play around with combination suits this winter, and play on shades of grey or navy when creating a pant suit look. Also, don’t be afraid to foray into your partner’s cufflink collection. Cufflinks are an excellent way to accessorise any shirt and pant combination!

TIP TWO: RARING RUFFLE

Winter might make us feel as if we need to hide inside and sacrifice style to the elements. But why should we? Swap out a simple white shirt or black pencil skirt, for one with additional detailing to add fun and flirty elements to your ensemble. After all, inside an office building, the layers come off, so use the boardroom as your catwalk to showcase a feminine yet edgy look!

 MORGAN                                                                       Y.A.S

our tip: tailoring is key. Even the simplest white shirt can be elevated by adding ruffles, buttons or hardware. Seek out accessories that are office appropriate for your corporate code, and let your ensembles speak for themselves!

TIP THREE: FLIRTING WITH FLORAL

Whilst floral may be a typically spring fling, taking floral prints in moody Burgundy or purple tones can help add colour to a dreary winters day. Play around with the length of floral dresses or skirts, and have fun mixing up floral prints with other textures such as satin or velvet – especially if your dress code is casual business.

PORTMANS                                                            PORTMANS

our tip: florals in winter are always about balance. darker tones will add depth to any look, even if the floral is understated or subtle.

TIP FOUR: BOXED BLOUSES

As the wind chill picks up, swap out crepe or silk blouses for cashmere knits flaunting a mock or turtle neck as a fun addition underneath a blazer. A striking maroon turtleneck under a simple yet well tailored pant suit might make all the difference to your look and feel for the day.

our tip: whilst you don’t need to spend exorbitant amounts of money on knitwear, ensure you invest in pieces that do not reveal threads or catch pills easily. Maintaining a crisp appearance by being well groomed is equally about your hair and makeup, as it is about the state of your clothing.

TIP FIVE: ACCENT WITH ACCESSORIES

Scarves and big, bold bags are the way to go in winter. A chic scarf adds warmth to any look and is a great way to add colour and other textures to otherwise simpler ensembles. Also carrying a more structured tote that fits a lot more will add an air of no-nonsense boss lady as you confidently strut to your building, even in the coldest of temperatures.

our tip: as with clothing, spend time and invest carefully in accessories such as bags and scarves. These items should carry you throughout multiple seasons.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

This week is about borrowing from the boys – a recreation of the traditional three-piece suit with the ultimate feminine twist. We haven’t forgotten the tie either!

$HOW ME THE MONEY!

There’s one colour that never fails to make you look expensive.

Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t black and it’s ability to add allure and slim you down; or red, which adds classic appeal.

WhoWhatWear reports that camel is one colour that looks good on every skin tone, and adds true luxe to any look. But let’s break down exactly how YOU should wear camel this season:

SKIN TONE

Camel items generally come in three tones: pink, brown and yellow. Choosing the right tone for your skin has a huge impact on your overall complexion. To enhance your natural highlight, warmer skinned individuals should choose camel garments with a yellow tone, whilst cooler toned women should choose a camel garment or accessory with a pink or quartz tone.

STYLING CAMEL

Styling camel is easy. almost any garment and accessory features camel. This week’s post heroes camel in three different looks – corporate, cocktail and casual (but by now, you should know that our casual looks still pack a huge punch! )

THE (TOTE)AL PACKAGE

Loading Likes...

When any lady goes out, there are at least five things she will always have on hand. For us, it’s having our phones, wallets, a snack, our lipstick of choice and a glasses case.

With this in mind, today’s post is a guide to selecting the right kind of bag, depending on the place you’re going. We hope you gain some inspiration for updates to your autumn/winter wardrobe as well! But do keep in mind, that bags, like almost any accessory are all year round, depending on how you style them!

CORPORATE

FLORSHEIM                     COLETTE                     KATE SPADE                    CLARE V

It’s a no brainer really. At work, our purses need to fit not only our essentials, but document wallets, a laptop or tablet as well. Monotoned structured totes, in deeper colours like black or brown, or off-white are the safest options because these bags will go with all your ensembles. To change it up a little, finishing your corporate ensemble with a beautiful red or blue work purse is a great idea as well!

DAY TIME CASUAL

COLETTE                           CHLOE                          COLETTE                            ZARA

The key to good skin is hydration right? When out, having a bottle of water is another addition to the list of essentials. Carrying a bag that can not only fit essentials but bits of shopping as well is important. Gravitate towards chic bucket bags or mini backpacks that  are functional, stylish and comfortable to use all day.

EVENINGS

GUESS               CHARLES AND KEITH             CHLOE                             ZARA

Stress free is the policy when going out at night. Light, secure and chic bags are key. Having a zipper and attachable cross body strap are essential. One thing to look for is a bag that has a hidden, secure pocket to store money in. This saves having to carry a wallet as well. Another great option would be to invest in a phone case that has a wallet or card holder feature so all your essential cards (ID, credit card etc) are on you at all times.

A VINTAGE VETERAN: VELVET

Loading Likes...

Materials.

They are the underrated gems that play such an important role on our runways. This season, velvet has made a huge comeback. But given its past dalliances in the 70s and 80s, society has rendered the material unwearable.

So how can a boss lady make such a luxe fabric work for her?

Here’s how:

ACCESSORIES:

boots.png

SHOELLAB

Shoes are the easiest way to incorporate velvet, because the material gets hidden. It’s like having your own little secret in our ensemble. Floral boots are huge right now, especially in a velvet finish. Pair your boots with cropped jeans and a tailored blazer; or let the boots do the talking by wearing a simple monochromatic dress.

necklace.png

ASOS

Elevate your looks with velvet necklaces in colours like Burgundy or navy blue. And to wear velvet for a more casual ensemble, choose necklaces with metals or beading entwined with velvet. Such necklaces compliment Sabrina, off-shoulder or boat necklines!

turban.jpg

NAMJOSH

Try something new to enhance your casual links and give an ensemble personality with a velvet turban.

66852_328024_185677.jpg

COUNTRY ROAD

Velvet scarves add texture and shine, perfect for a corporate outfit when paired with a trench coat and pencil dress. For a casual outing, a scarf will always compliment a fail proof jeans, boots and sweater combination.

bag.jpg

SOLE SOCIETY

Bags make a statement on their own. For a corporate setting, finish off your power suit with a structured velvet bag. For the evening, deeper toned velvet evening bags in Burgundy, crimson or purple will add a chic and unique vibe to your look.

CLOTHING:

TOPSHOP                                                                    H&M

Velvet is a soft, cozy yet luxe material flaunting elegance and fluidity. Straighter figures should opt for tops that are flown and smooth over the waist. Curvier figures should select a more fitted top but ensure the top is not too tight and always make sure to tuck it in! Looser velvet tops can be belted to flaunt your curves.

pants.jpg

OLD NAVY

On the bottom, cropped trousers are the most flattering silhouette, especially to take your look from day to night. Pair your trousers with a smart shirt and some pumps, for the perfect corporate look. To take this look to your evening events, simply change up your makeup and swap out your work tote for a detailed clutch.

As for the curvier ladies, while velvet wide leg trousers may be taboo, velvet is a forgiving material and looks fabulous in a slim cut. Choose a length that passes slightly over your ankle to elongate your legs. Tuck in your top and tie your look together with a belt.

skirts.png

ASOS

As for skirts, velvet is a great transitional material, both seasonally and for occasions. Pair a midi velvet skirt with a ruffled top and classic pumps for a daytime corporate look, and simply add a bold lip and lazy curls for the evening. Velvet’s smoothing texture makes it the perfect fabric for curvier women, especially in midi, pencil or A-Line silhouettes. Women flaunting thinner legs can opt for mini skirts or tighter midi skirts. But remember, the elegance of the material should reflect in the cut of the piece as well!

dress.png

BARDOT

Velvet dresses are uncommon, so they’re best to be showcased at events where the dress can do all the talking. All you need with a gorgeous velvet dress are simple accessories in matching metallic tones and a fierce attitude!

hmprod.jpeg

H&M

Velvet jackets and blazers are funky and feminine. They can be paired with a classic corporate skirt and skirt combination, or a tailored jumpsuit for the evening. Structured velvet jackets with tailoring at the waist flatter curvier women best. As for straighter figured women, opting for a masculine silhouette with an oversized blazer hitting the tops of your thighs will accentuate your high points.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

This week’s ensemble lets a velvet bag do ALL the talking! this look can be taken from day to night easily. The trends featured are navy on black, blazer dresses and sock boots.

SPEECHLESS FOR THE SLEEVELESS

Loading Likes...

Raise your hand if you own a sleeveless jacket, maybe in shearling, maybe with a faux fur detail. That’s right. Every woman has owned a sleeveless jacket at some stage. These jackets are the quintessential autumn layering piece. They are versatile, perfect as a cool statement, and make for great overthrows for when it really cools down.

Today’s post is going to show how to take one sleeveless jacket (below) and style it for work, casual outings and formal occasions. This versatile piece is structured and classy. It features a faux fur collar with leather detailing at the shoulders and a leather belt at the waist.

THE DETAILS

jacket: Seed Heritage

CORPORATE

Faux fur is a glamorous, but a more casual addition to an outfit ensemble. It is not generally associated with an office environment. However, investing in a sleeveless jacket with a detachable fur feature is a bonus. A stricter work dress code is easily adhered to by removing the fur lining and dressing your jacket with a cashmere scarf instead.

And when you leave work for team drinks, simply swap the scarf and fur detail and you’re ready to go!

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

The sleeveless jacket has been styled to accentuate the clean, military feel of the garment – there is no doubt everybody will know the boss lady has arrived!

Ladies, you can never go wrong when pairing a sleeveless jacket with some tailored pants, a snug sweater or boots. It is the ultimate partner for achieving comfort chic style, whether it be with or without the fur. Play around with how you zip up the jacket and accessorise. If fur isn’t your taste, there’s always an alternate option.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION:

Autumn is a season of transition. It is all about layering so bring out those summer pieces and be creative with your looks. When Learing a sleeveless jacket, it’s not only about the colours that I combined. Play around with textures as well, such as, knits, cashmere, fur and microsuede.

WHERE’S WALLY?

Stripes. Who doesn’t love a good striped garment? Stripes take us from day to night, they’re chic, wearable and make us look put together whether we’re running to the grocery store or running a meeting.

The beauty about wearing stripes is that there is no formula. There are considerations, yes, but stripes are so versatile that they flatter any figure. The two main considerations are stripe thickness and colour combination, to ensure you look flattering from all angles.

ON TOP:

Length and fitting:

For the curvier ladies, choose a top with a tighter fit and a shorter length. We’re talking cropped tops or jumpers, or longer tops that tuck in neatly into skirts, pants or jeans.

THE PEOPLE                                                                   PIPER

On the flip side, ladies with broader shoulders or fuller upper bodies should consider looser, longer tops that elongate the upper body.

top3.png

JACQUI-E

Neckline:

Necklines are a personal preference. However, here’s a great guide that summarises the types of necklines that exist. Shop around and see what flatters your figure best!

ON THE BOTTOM:

Pants:

Horizontal stripes on pants are pretty rare. Vertical stripes are definitely the more fitting of the two when it comes to styling pants. Fitting is essential to making stripes work for you down below:

If you do have a heavier bottom half or fuller thighs, go for trouser styled pants with a tailored finish. Culottes or straight trousers featuring a prominent dark stripe will create balance, especially if you have a narrower upper body.

 JACQUI-E                                                               TOPSHOP

If you flaunt thin, long legs, enhance the athletic shape with trousers where the more prominent strip is a lighter colour. Go for slim fit trousers or printed Ponte pants.

pant3.png

MISSGUIDED

Skirts:

Stripes on skirts can be vertical, horizontal, oblique or a mix of the three. With different cuts and styles, you can really get away with wearing stripes regardless of your figure. The main thing to consider is stripe direction, and skirt fitting:

Ladies with curvier bottom halves should gravitate for vertical or oblique stripes, to ensure they don’t overaccentuate the lovely curves they possess. If you have a narrow bottom half or a fuller stomach, you’re in luck because stripes in any direction will flatter your form!

As for fitting, curvier ladies should choose a skirt that doesn’t stick too much to their figure. Pencil skirts, a-line skirts or skirts following a mermaid silhouette are excellent choices. A tighter skirt should generally be paired with a thick dark stripes to ensure the attention is kept up top. This is easily attainable by wearing a belt.

skirt1

ASOS

On the other hand, women with straighter figures can wear any skirt. A striped skirt is perfect for bringing attention down below and making your figure look more balanced! For our gorgeous boss mums who might have a fuller stomach but shapely legs, definitely consider a skirt with a more flounced silhouette and avoid anything that is too snug on the stomach. After all, comfort is key!

AUTUMN 2018

Red. Plaid. Moody florals.

Autumn is finally here, so today, we bring to you a look book featuring the hottest Autumn trends, straight from the runways of Paris and New York. Our special twist, however, is that these ensembles don’t require you to purchase an entirely new wardrobe.

BEHIND THE LENS:

As a budding photographer I (Simran) wanted to highlight Sydney’s raw urban vibe. Sydney doesn’t possess the same constant motion like New York or London do. Our street vibe is more relaxed. There is a real air of stylishly owning the boardwalk or footpath, strutting down George Street with a long black in your hand. It’s urban chic blanketed by romanticised relaxation. Even on a Monday morning, Sydney city pulses with an aura that encourages us to groove to work, rather than push and shove as we run to catch a train or bus.

With this in mind, I wanted to capture organic photos in the heart of Sydney. Two different locations were selected for this lookbook – Martin Place and Barangaroo. Being the old town heart of Sydney, Martin Place is a walk through history, with stunning sandstone buildings and architectural marvels. In complete antithesis, Barangaroo is minimalist, effortless and cool. The organic fusion between modern simplicity, metal and nature makes Barangaroo unique. Beyond the modern glass structures, we still find solace in the harbour, lapping at the shores of our business district.

This lookbook is an amalgamation of what Salonee and I stand for – being independent, power woman making our marks in the history books. These looks are feminine, sassy, eye-catching and most importantly, wearable. I couldn’t have chosen better locations to curate such an enigmatic collection with my sister.

This collection was styled by Salonee Goyal and curated by Simran Goyal

GETTING DOWN AND DOTTY

RED HOT

Incorporated trends: Red | Blue on Black

Every boss lady needs an outfit that works for both corporate and evening occasions. Red is the perfect colour to accomplish this. By combining a bold, sophisticated, red blouse with a blue pencil skirt, and tying the look together with a black waist belt, you’ll be on point all day at any occasion. And of course, there’s nothing like a classic pair of black stilettos to add drama and highlight the true feminine power of a boss lady.

WINTER BLOOMING

Incorporated trends: Winter Florals | Midi Skirts | Belts | Mixed prints

For those cooler autumn days, why not incorporate dark, moody florals into your look? This look is perfect for casual, corporate settings and day events. It’s a timeless look because of the structured midi skirt – a perfect addition to any wardrobe. Finish the look with a textured statement belt that works on the same colour scheme as your bag and shoes. This will  really add glamour to an otherwise comfortable and timeless Autumn look.

NATURE’S CALLING

Incorporated trends: Neutral Tones (camel, sheepskin) | Midi Skirts | Belts

Neutral tones. Is there anything more elegant for a corporate setting? Capitalise on how in demand neutrals are this season by layering them together in one look. Taking neutrals in different shades and accompanying them with garments of varying textures is one of the simplest ways to throw together a sleek ensemble.

MATCH MAKER

incorporate trends: power suit | plastic/PVC| Nlue on black | red | fringes

All boss ladies NEED a power suit this season. Designers featured bold, monochromatic ensembles, particularly in red and navy blue. But to make power suits wearable for everyday whilst still incorporating trends like fringing and red, feature the bolder elements as your accessories. This look is commanding, with the striped white blazer, contrasting black trousers and PVC white pumps. The red tote elevates the look even further, with a charming little fringe detail to add a flirty bit of fun to a strong, no-nonsense ensemble.

CITY CHICA

incorporated trends: Baker boy caps | plaid | neutrals | belts

Here’s an ensemble that takes a fun spin on the whole corporate, power woman aura the runways gave us this season. This look is comfortable, chic and effortlessly conveys androgyny. Plaid doesn’t always have to be in a jacket or dress. Instead of going out and buying new trend pieces, borrow the plaid belt from your chic summer dress, and use it as a waist belt for your trousers instead. Furthermore, tie in a baker boy cap to give your look some street style dimension.

SALAMANCA SOIREE

incorporated trends: pink |transitional summer dresses | neutrals | belts

Who says the onset of Autumn means we need to pack away our beloved summer florals? Take your summer dress into autumn by adding a statement belt to your dress, and finishing the look with a pair of autumn appropriate boots. The combination of pink with floral prints and pops of natural tones will smoothly transition you from summer to autumn, and of course, ensure you stand out!

GRIDED GIRL ABOUT TOWN#

incorporated trends: plaid | masculine tailoring | laced up boots

Day and night events don’t always need to be sober or chic in that feminine, traditional sense. Play on masculine traits by wearing well tailored blazers, especially if they have shoulder pads. Tie in grey and green, with a classic pair of skinny jeans, and create contrast by selecting a fitted, knit.

FOLK FLAIR

incorporated trends: folk/paisley prints | plaid | midi | fringing | circle bag

This look is an interesting fusion of sober textures, neutral tones and bold prints. Folk prints aren’t every woman’s niche, so the challenge in this look involved making such a different print wearable. With fashion, it is all about balance. To mute the boldness of the pattern on the dress, I have paired the garment with a long line cardigan. Embellishing your bag with a paisley silk scarf is perfect to heighten any ensemble, whether it is for corporate or evening events.

GALACTIC GODDESS

incorporated trends: galactic print | embellished shoes | metallics

No lookbook can be complete without an evening ensemble. This look goes beyond most comfort zones. It’s fun and different, and plays an interesting perspective on the galactic vibe Chanel featured on their runway. Galactic print doesn’t have to be literal stars and planets… it is an opportunity to dive a little deeper. The top, is actually a dress with an asymmetric hem tucked into a pair of split leg culottes. To add even more drama and brighten the look, I selected a pair of studded, metallic stilettos and shiny jewellery. My hair has been styled into a sleek top knot up-do with tight dutch braid detail at the back of the head to make it even more futuristic.

HOLKY POLKY

Polka dots are everywhere this season. But how can we take a print usually associated with looking either preppy or matronly, and give it a fresh makeover? This post is your one stop guide on how to do exactly that for the upcoming autumn/winter season:

Let’s see what the biggest names in fashion did with polka dots on the runway:

Balenciaga

source: Vogue

Balenciaga took a 180 from the streets based Vetements collection, to capture modern sophistication. With a focus on ease and wearability, Balenciaga featured looks that had a vibe of edge, attitude and noncholance. Polka dots featured on maxi dresses flaunting monochromatic colour schemes and flares; and as accessories to jazz up professional looking ensembles. The addition of polka dots added a girlish flair without taking away from the effortless professional vibe of the collection.

Loewe

Loewe created a sense of drama and raptured focus for their collection. Although they were on the runway for autumn/winter, the collection was full of more summer appropriate dress styles and tops. And to capture the attention of shoppers everywhere, black was detailed throughout the collection. Perfect really for us to induce in our love for the brand. Polka dots were bold but stayed in more neutral tones. Perfect to not seem overdone with such an intense print.

HOW TO INCORPORATE POLKA DOTS INTO YOUR WARDROBE:

Accessories:

Polka dots on any accessory make your whole ensemble come to life. Even adding a polka dot scarf to a plain black tote will elevate your look.

Clothing:

For clothing, there is no real formula according to body type, colour or print size. Polka dots are subjective, and depend on personal taste and the situation you’re styling for. Consider your body shape and the tightness of your garment instead of print size. Curvier women should gravitate towards a tighter fitting top whereas straighter figured women should wear a looser fitting shirt.

For pants, curvy ladies should stick to a more subtle print, whilst the straight, athletic figure shapes can be as dramatic as possible to draw attention to the lower half of the body.

This same concept goes for skirts, dresses and jackets.

If you’re wearing polka dots to work, pair them with something more sober or understated.

Polka dots are also perfect for a casual ensemble. A simple sun dress or skirt can always be jazzed up with a polka dot print. And if you’re more daring, why not translate polka dots onto a jumpsuit or a pair of tailored shorts?

As for the night, sheer materials are a great way to make polka dots look sexy.

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

styled by Salonee Goyal, curated by Simran Goyal

For this week’s outfit inspiration, I featured polka dots on my skirt and created a look that can be transitioned from day to night. I stuck with a classic colour palette and played around with my accessories to create a feminine and flirty dimension to the look.
