MAD ABOUT THE MIDI

Midi skirts are perhaps one of the longest standing trend items we’ve seen recently. But what design is best suited for your body type?

I’ve complied a handy little list of tips to show you how the midi can work for you.

PEAR

If you have a pear shaped figure, your hips are the widest part of your body. An a-line silhouette drapes over your hips without drawing away from your narrow waist. This gives the illusion of a more balanced silhouette.

If the skirt you choose is patterned, select a design that has vertical detailing. A midi pencil skirt would look fantastic. However, ensure that attention remains on the upper half of your body by selecting a top with more drama. After all, who says pear-shaped women can’t wear pencil skirts? It’s all about balance.

MY LOOK

After another successful haul from mum’s wardrobe, I paired a vintage beige midi a-line skirt that showcases a classy knee-high split, with a black and white, polka dot v-neck. Staying true to the formula written above, I drew the attention upward by wearing both a patterned top and a belt.

I completed the look with a pair of classic black pumps, a silver watch, black and silver drops, and a Guess cross-body bag, with silver detailing that tied in with the silver accented jewellery.

APPLE

If your figure is more towards an apple shape, then your mid-section carries greater weight than the lower half of your body. A structured, high-waisted umbrella skirt is ideal because the waistband gives the illusion of a tighter stomach. This combined with the umbrella silhouette makes you look more curvaceous.

HOURGLASS

If you have an hourglass figure, a pencil midi skirt would be the best option. For this figure, the greatest asset is the well-defined, small waist. The pencil skirt will ensure your waist is not hidden, and will simultaneously drape smoothly over your thighs.

If pencil skirts aren’t your cup of tea, an a-line midi skirt would also look fabulous. Just ensure that the attention is kept upwards. Accessories such as belts are excellent for this purpose.

RECTANGLE

For a rectangular shaped body, the shoulders, waist and hips are approximately the same width, so a body-conscious (body-con) midi skirt would be the best option. Every curve in your body will be emphasised by the fitting nature of the skirt.

INVERTED TRIANGLE

If you have an inverted triangle body shape, your upper half is wider than your lower half. The key is to draw attention down. An a-line midi skirt would be ideal, as this silhouette gives the illusion of greater curves. A pencil skirt can also be work, however, choose a pencil skirt with a pattern or a flared hem.

I hope these tips and tricks inspire you to try something new in 2018!
